Backstage Academy of Performing Arts, recognised nationally for it's work with young people, has opened a Performing Arts Academy for 7-18 year olds at the Briery Gap Centre, Macroom.
The Academy runs every Saturday from 10am-12.30pm and during the two and a half hour session each week students, grouped by age, will undertake workshops on a variety of performing arts subjects from Drama, Mime and Comedy to Dance (hip-hop/street/jazz), Musical Theatre and acting for Film/TV.
Backstage has been running for fifteen years and has Academies in several locations around the country The staff are a unique combination of teacher and performing arts practicioner, well known in the industry. Backstage students can be seen in various shows from TV series 'Fair City','Moone Boy',' Game of Thrones' and 'Amber' to the summer production of 'Grease' at Cork Opera House and 'the Exam' at the Moat Theatre in Naas.A group of Backstage students have just returned from performing at the Edinburgh Festival. At Backstage there is an emphasis on teaching students core performing arts skills and the work encourages self confidence and develops communication skills.
Backstage are holding Open Days on Saturdays-28th September, 5th October and 12th October from 10am-12.30pm so that students have the opportunity to experience the work of the company before enrolling. In fact nobody can join Backstage without first spending a session with them. Application forms will be available at the Open Days. Entry to the Open Days are free of charge but you must arrive in time for a 10am start and be prepared to stay for the full session-no need to book in advance-just come along.
