Twenty representatives from Macroom Twinning Association were in Italy recently for the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Twinning Charter between Macroom and the Northern Italian town of Marcallo con Casone. The Macrompians were joined by a similar group from Bubry in France to mark the milestone anniversary of twinning between the three towns. Macroom has been linked with Bubry for over 30 years and twinned with Marcallo con Casone in 2002.
In recent years the twinning committee in each town acts as hosts to the other two towns on a three year rotating cycle. This year Marcallo were hosts and they put on a fine welcome for their international twins. The Macroom group was headed by Mayor of Macroom, Councillor Tommy Counihan and Macroom Twinning Association chairman, Paul Collins. It also included some other town councillors and musicians from Aghinagh and Cill na Martra Comhaltas. They flew out to Italy on Thursday morning, landing in Milan and heading north to spend their first day on the shores of beautiful Lake Como. On Friday they came south to Marcallo con Casone, which lies twenty-five miles west of Milan. The Macroom group arrived in Marcallo at 6pm and at a buffet supper met their host families. Later in the evening the children of the primary school in Marcallo entertained the visitors with a display of regional dances. On Saturday the group visited the Mazzetti Distillery in the town of Altavilla and had lunch there and returned later to Marcallo to attend the closing concert of the Piano - a national piano contest for the youth, Pianissimo.
