Macroom’s Eurovision Street Party

Having a local participant from Macroom reaching in the Finals of Eurovision Song Contest and representing Ireland is something very special, and our community wanted to show our support for Bambie Thug in the best way we know, and that was to organise a street party.

This also offered a momentous opportunity to promote Macroom, both nationally and internationally in the most positive way. Once we knew on Tuesday night that Bambie Thug had reached the finals Lee Valley Enterprise Board, Macroom Lions Club, Tidy Towns, Briery Gap, and some other individuals came together on Wednesday night and met again Thursday morning and within 24 hours had together organised this unique and amazing event. This is the result of a wonderful community working together with the support of Marie O’Leary and her team at Macroom’s Municipal District Office of Cork County Council. Macroom is a town that has a tradition of organising festivals so it was all systems go for the next 24 hours.

Businesses were all been asked to dress their windows in the national colours and flags, and many embraced this with some fantastic shop window displays supporting Bambie Thug and Ireland.

Street Banners were erected and the word spread far and wide with the traffic activity on all social media platforms, and created a huge national media’s interest in the event.

The Free Street Party for Saturday night’s final had a livestream of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 on a big screen in the centre square area of the town. This was a family event with a competition for the Best Witch fancy dress costumes, face painting and much more for everyone of all ages to enjoy.

People came in their hundreds, Bambie Thug’s friends, family, neighbours, and well-wishers from far and near, along with Eurovision Song Contest fans, some with their packed picnic and gear, and others took advantage of the seating and tables provided to enjoy the spectacle. Then as Bambie Thug took to the stage the reaction was brilliant, with both kids and adults all dancing & cheering in the late evening sunshine. When Australia awarded Ireland the “douze points” the square was rocking with excitement. The final result of 136 point and sixth place overall was a wonderful outcome for Ireland who had not reached a final since 2018.

The organising group wish to thank everyone that helped in any way in bringing this event together in such a short period of time.
